Discovering pickleball wasn’t something I planned. I’ve always loved sports. Growing up, volleyball and badminton were my jam—I even played at the varsity level in high school. Sports have always been my way to stay active, challenge myself, and have fun, and that mindset followed me well into adulthood.
In my 20s, while serving in the Army, I discovered ping pong and racquetball. There was something addictive about the speed, strategy, and full-body workout. I loved how competitive yet playful it felt. Looking back, sports have always been my reset button—a way to stay energized, focused, and connected.
But pickleball? That was a sport I didn’t even know existed… until three years ago.

ToggleMy First Encounter With Pickleball (By Accident)
My first encounter with a pickleball court happened completely by accident. In 2021, I was traveling with my younger brother and his family in St. George, Utah. We were exploring the neighborhood around our vacation rental when I noticed several courts tucked away nearby.
My first thought was, “That’s a really tiny tennis court.” My brother had no clue what pickleball was either, so we shrugged and kept walking. At the time, I had no idea I was staring at the beginning of something that would eventually become a huge part of my life.
Looking back, discovering pickleball felt like stumbling onto a sport that had been quietly waiting for me all along. I had no idea that this tiny court would teach me about fun, friendship, and fitness in ways I hadn’t expected. Here are three reasons I fell in love with pickleball.
Reason 1 – Fun and Approachable Gameplay
What struck me most wasn’t just the game itself—it was how fun and approachable it felt. Unlike some sports that seem intimidating, pickleball welcomed everyone, from beginners to experienced players. Watching residents laugh, cheer, and encourage each other, I realized I’d stumbled onto a game that made exercise feel like play.
Even my first attempts were hilarious—I missed shots, tripped over my own feet, and laughed the whole time. That sense of fun is exactly why so many people fall in love with pickleball at first sight.
Reason 2 – Social Connections and Community
Another thing that surprised me was the community aspect. The residents didn’t just play—they shared stories, encouraged beginners, and created an environment where anyone could belong. Pickleball became a doorway to new friendships, laughter, and connections I hadn’t anticipated.
Many people are drawn to pickleball for the social experience itself. According to USA Pickleball, the sport’s rapid growth is fueled by the sense of camaraderie and community it creates.
For me, discovering pickleball wasn’t just about learning a new game—it was about rediscovering joy, movement, and connection.
Reason 3 – Fitness and Mental Challenge
Finally, pickleball challenged me in ways that were great for my body and mind. Coming from volleyball, badminton, ping pong, and racquetball, the coordination and strategy felt familiar—but the game also offered a gentler, low-impact way to stay fit.
Pickleball isn’t just fun—it also provides cardiovascular benefits, improves balance, and boosts mental sharpness, as noted by experts at the Mayo Clinic
It’s competitive enough to keep you engaged, yet accessible for long-term play, making it perfect for anyone looking to stay active and sharp. As I got more serious about playing, I started paying attention to paddles, shoes, and other gear that make the game more comfortable and fun—things I’ll dive into in future posts.
A Journey That’s About More Than a Game
That one invitation from the resident to come and join them ended up changing my routine, my fitness, and my social life in ways I never anticipated. Pickleball brought movement back into my daily life and introduced me to an entirely new circle of friends.
For me, discovering pickleball wasn’t just about learning a new game—it was about rediscovering joy, movement, and connection.
Stay tuned, because in my next post, I’ll share exactly how I got started, my first (hilarious) attempts at the game, and why pickleball might just be the perfect sport for anyone over 40 looking to get moving, stay social, and have a blast.
